Sony’s New 400mm and 600mm Primes Change the Game for Wildlife Photographers

Sony has released two new telephoto primes, a 400mm and a 600mm. On paper, neither is exotic. The focal lengths are familiar, and the apertures hold no surprises. The breakthrough is somewhere else: weight.

Both lenses come in under one kilogram. The 400mm weighs 950 grams, and the 600mm weighs 951 grams. That is not feather-light, but it crosses a threshold that matters. Handheld shooting becomes realistic. Hiking with a 600mm becomes realistic. So does travel.

The heavy tripod can stay home, and so can the monopod. Every wildlife photographer knows the burden of that extra weight, and it grows heavier as we age. Our bodies change, and the gear has never gotten any lighter, until now.

Pair these lenses with Sony’s compact mirrorless bodies and the total kit weight drops dramatically. Carry it for twenty minutes or for eight hours, and you will feel the difference. The leap from zero to one matters more than the climb from one to ten, and this is that first leap.

“The leap from zero to one matters more than the climb from one to 10, and this is that first leap.”

For nature and wildlife photographers, this is fabulous news. A long lens, a lighter pack, and more time in the field

Fasten your seat belt, friends. Great times ahead.
